As a socio-cultural historian Lloyd has several key interests: ancient conceptions of gender, women in antiquity, ancient dress, the ancient Near East, and the reception of antiquity in popular culture. His work on gender in the ancient world includes investigations of clothing, social space, artistic fantasy and social reality, and theatrical performance. He is the author of "Aphrodite's Tortoise: the Veiled Woman of Ancient Greece" and has written several studies on the role of dress in ancient societies.
Lloyd is also interested in the reception of antiquity in popular culture, especially epic films. He was the consultant for costumes on Oliver Stone's 2004 movie Alexander.
Achaemenid Persia
Lloyd's major research interest is in the history, culture, and society of Achaemenid Iran and of ancient Greek perceptions of Persia. He is currently co-authoring a volume entitled "Ctesias' 'History of Persia': Tales of the Orient", a full translation of the 'Persica'. He is also writing a source book on Persian history for undergraduate students. Future publication plans include a major study of women and the inner court (the ‘harem') in Achaemenid Persia and the ancient Near East, and a study of court ceremony in Persia and the Near East.
At Edinburgh Lloyd offer courses which encapsulate all of his research interests and has also organized student tours to Greece, Egypt and Iran. He frequently visits Iran for research and he has made several television documentaries on Persian history, including "Lost Worlds: Persepolis" (Channel 4).
