Congratulations to Dr Geoffrey Summers MBE, for the recent addition of these letters to his name, in recognition of his services to British archaeological research in Turkey.
Geoffrey Summers lives in Ankara, and directs ongoing fieldwork at the archaeological site of Kerkenes in central Turkey. He has a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Archaeology from the University of Manchester, England, and has taken part in excavations in many parts of the Near East as well as in the United Kingdom and in Africa. For eight years he was Assistant Director of the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara.

The Kerkenes Project, a major international research project, is supported by the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara, the National Geographic Society, the British Academy, METU, The Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago and a number of corporate and private sponsors. Collaboration with the University of California at Berkeley (excavation) from 1999-2004, the University at Buffalo (remote sensing and excavation) 1999-2004, the Oriental Institute at Chicago University (remote sensing and excavation) 2005 to present, CNRS and the French Institute at Istanbul (geomorphology) since 2001, The University of Melbourne (excavation) in 2005. The Project also collaborates with the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin (environmental studies), Cornell University (dendrochronological dating), Boston University (archaeobotany), the Japanese Archaeological Institute in Turkey (geophysics), the University of New England (INAA Anatolian Pottery), and with other institutions and academics in a number of fields. The Project has always sought full involvement by students, several of whom have been encouraged to contribute to jointly authored papers. To date one PhD and two MSc theses on aspects of the Kerkenes Project have been completed.
2001 onwards Documentation and Heritage Management of Ile de la Passe, Mauritius
Part of a wider scheme to preserve and protect islets on the southern side of Mauritius, this international project involves the cleaning, documentation and conservation of Napoleonic and British defences. Because of its strategic position Mauritius was the key to the Indian Ocean until the advent of steam ships. Ile de la Passe boasts some of the best preserved and most important Napoleonic military architecture in the southern hemisphere. The project is coordinated by the National Heritage Fund of Mauritius. Students from the University of Mauritius participate while post-fieldwork is conducted at METU. From 2003 to 2006 the project was backed by the Earthwatch Institute.
