Alan French MA MLitt read Classics at Bristol University and Archaeology at Birmingham University. He has excavated widely in Britain and Italy. Alan retired recently from the University of Winchester where he was formerly Head of the School of Humanities and Heritage Studies and lectured in Greek and Roman archaeology. He has also been an Associate Lecturer at the Open University. He has particular interests in the Roman Army, in Greek and Roman towns, and in early travellers to southern Italy.
