Archaeology is by its nature adventurous, and by taking a holiday with a party of other people that adventure can seem compromised. To some people travelling in any kind of a group is like being a captive of their holiday and other peoples’ decisions. We wanted to escape that!

Bare Bones Tours - Archaeology holidays for free spirits

These tours were invented so that you could have the best of both worlds – an expert archaeologist on hand without the hassle of having to make the holiday arrangements – but the freedom and independence to spend time as you wish to spend it. Opt in and out of site visits, or take advantage of local buses and trains to explore on your own sometimes. Wherever there is a choice available, we leave your meal arrangements up to you - a sandwich munched as you admire the view, or a white-table cloth dinner...

Other Travellers

People travel with Bare Bones who are rather younger than one might normally find on a group holiday.  Families with teenage children enjoy them too. There is the company of people like you if you want it, but it is also quite possible to enjoy a holiday on your own or with your partner for much of the time.  Single travellers will always be invited by the guide lecturer to join them at mealtimes if they wish.

Hotels & travel

All our hotels are chosen to be clean, friendly and well-positioned. Where possible we travel by local transport. Buses and trains are a fun way of getting about without feeling too much like a tourist. You can choose our group flights or book your own transport.

Free time
We have integrated time into our itineraries to spend exploring the local area, visiting other sites, or simply relaxing. Expert advice will always be available from the guide lecturer.

Making History Last Thursday I travelled up to London to attend the launch of the final report on the excavations carried out at San Vincenzo al Volturno in the region of Molise in Italy.  Some Andante guests may remember visiting this site where the great Carolingian abbey with its remarkable painted crypts…
